Tilt & turn windows in Walthamstow Village

Around Walthamstow Village you will mostly find Victorian terraces with sash windows and a few much older buildings. On Victorian terraces, tilt and turn windows are best kept to rear extensions or loft rooms, where their modern look matters less and inward opening helps cleaning.

Allow for the inward swing when planning rooms in a detached home, keeping furniture, blinds and deep window sills clear of the sash's opening arc. Tilt and turn styles rarely suit front elevations in conservation areas, so check with the council and consider them for hidden rear or side elevations instead.

The Village is a conservation area, so Waltham Forest Council expects changes to front windows and doors to suit the historic style. We check the guidance and, where needed, help with the planning side before work begins. The streets are narrow and parking is tight, so we plan fitting days carefully.

Tilt and turn windows open inwards in two ways: tilted at the top for secure ventilation, or turned fully like a door for cleaning and escape. They suit flats, high-rise homes, modern builds and any room where outward-opening windows are impractical or cleaning from outside is difficult.

• Tilt position for secure ventilation
• Turns fully inward for safe cleaning
• Large clear opening for emergency escape
