Aluminium windows in Hampstead Garden Suburb

The housing in Hampstead Garden Suburb is largely Arts and Crafts houses, cottages and early 20th-century flats. Larger detached homes can use aluminium for big feature windows and gable glazing, where the frame's strength supports wide panes without bulky mullions.

In flats and mansion blocks, aluminium may already be the specified material, so confirm frame colour and profile with the managing agent before arranging a survey. Where original steel windows survive in a conservation area, discuss slim aluminium replacements with the council early, as matching sightlines strongly affects whether they are acceptable.

Before any work, the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust usually needs to give consent, and the area is a conservation area under Barnet Council. We review the Trust's design guidance with you at survey, so drawings and quotes are prepared with approval in mind.

Aluminium windows use strong, slim frames that let more glass and daylight into a room, with powder-coated finishes in a wide range of colours. They suit modern homes, extensions and renovations, and owners of older properties wanting slim sightlines that echo original steel windows.

• Durable powder-coated colour finishes
• Thermally broken frames for better insulation
• Strong enough for large glazed openings
