Local advice

Aluminium bifold doors for Hampstead Garden Suburb homes

Around Hampstead Garden Suburb you will mostly find Arts and Crafts houses, cottages and early 20th-century flats. Larger detached homes can use corner bifolds or several sets across a rear elevation, but supporting steelwork must be designed to limit deflection over wide spans.

Bifolds suit ground-floor flats and maisonettes with gardens, but check the lease and get freeholder approval, as alterations to external walls are often restricted. In conservation areas, bifolds are usually limited to rear elevations, and slim frames in muted colours help them sit comfortably with older brickwork.

Before any work, the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust usually needs to give consent, and the area is a conservation area under Barnet Council. We review the Trust's design guidance with you at survey, so drawings and quotes are prepared with approval in mind.

Bifold doors are made of several panels that fold and stack neatly to one side, opening almost the full width of a wall to the garden. With slim aluminium frames, they suit kitchen extensions, garden rooms and homes where owners want a seamless link between indoor and outdoor living.

Questions from Hampstead Garden Suburb

Do I need planning permission for aluminium bifold doors in Hampstead Garden Suburb?

Hampstead Garden Suburb is a conservation area, and most window and door changes need Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust consent as well as possibly Barnet Council approval, so we check both before quoting. Replacing existing doors with bifolds on a house is usually permitted development and covered by FENSA, but new or widened openings need Building Regulations approval, and flats, listed buildings and conservation areas may need planning consent.

How soon can you fit aluminium bifold doors in Hampstead Garden Suburb?

Lead times vary by product and workload — confirmed with your quote. Being about 6.3 miles from our factory makes surveys, fitting days and aftercare visits easy to arrange.

Should bifold doors open inwards or outwards?

Outward opening is most common, as the panels stack outside and do not take up room space. Inward opening suits small patios, balconies or areas exposed to strong wind. The best choice depends on where you want the stacked panels to sit and how you use the space.

Can I see samples before I decide?

Yes. Our showroom is at Unit G, 1 Anthony Way, London N18 3QT (Mon–Fri 8am–5pm), about 6.3 miles from Hampstead Garden Suburb. We can also bring samples to your home in Hampstead Garden Suburb at the free survey.
