Triple glazing in Friern Barnet

The housing in Friern Barnet is largely Edwardian and interwar semis, terraces and converted flats. For 1930s semis, check that bay frames and hinges can support the extra weight of triple glazed units, especially on large opening sashes.

In flats near main roads or railways, triple glazing can help with comfort and noise, though acoustic laminated double glazing is sometimes more effective for sound alone. On Victorian terraces, triple glazing is best paired with wall and loft insulation improvements, since windows alone will not solve heat loss through solid brick walls.

The North Circular runs along the southern edge, and properties near it hear heavy traffic day and night. Well-sealed frames with acoustic glass can make a real difference to sleep. Getting here from Edmonton is a straight run of about 5.1 miles along the A406, which keeps surveys and fitting simple.

Triple glazing adds a third pane of glass and a second sealed gap, improving insulation and comfort beyond standard double glazing. It suits homeowners aiming for very high energy efficiency, people living near busy roads, and homes undergoing deep retrofits where walls, roofs and windows are all being upgraded together.

• Higher insulation than double glazing
• Warmer glass surface near windows
• Extra layer helps reduce outside noise
